World Cup today :- Netherlands v BRAZIL

Brazil’s first astronaut brought with him a Brazil and a soccer jersey!

Above the photo from collectSPACE.com that a Brazil’s first astronaut Marcos Pontes launches into space with his Expedition 13 crewmates on March 29, 2006. He is the only Brazilian to complete the NASA astronaut training program, although he switched to training in Russia after NASA’s Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.

A Russian-American crew and Brazil’s first astronaut flew into orbit onboard a Russian rocket bringing them on a two-day trip to the international space station. Brazil’s first man in space, Marcos C. Pontes, stayed at the station for nine days then returned to Earth on April 9 2006 with the station’s current crew of Russian Valery Tokarev and American Bill McArthur.

See the photo above where a video camera aboard the Russian spaceship showed Pontes grinning broadly, giving a thumbs-up and pointing to his country’s flag on the left arm of his spacesuit. Besides the flag, Marcos Pontes said he also took other items important to his Latin American nation — including a Brazilian soccer jersey, at this time (March 2006) he was hoping it would bring his national team victory in this summer’s World Cup 2006 in Germany, and of course again World Cup 2010 in South Africa.
