World Cup today :- Germany v SPAIN (Semi-Finals)
Spanish visual double stars (above) – Over the last 40 years, a small group Spanish amateurs has been measured visual double stars.
They are currently preparing to publish all the measurements made between 1970 and 2001 – some of 10,000 lists – this massive work was represented in October 2000 at the annual meeting of the Astronomical Society of France’s Double Star Commission held in Castelldefels near Barcelona, Spain, so let this hope to inspire Spain working hard to target to win the World Cup 2010 at South Africa?
The first published in 1973 contained measurements of 1,200 double stars, using a simple micrometer and a 75mm (3 inch) aperture Polar Refractor then 12 years later 3.5 meter diameter dome with 260mm (10 inch) aperture Newtonian telescope. Then again a new observatory has been constructed using public and private investment and located 18 miles south of Barcelona, Spain – inside the Garraf Natural Park (was opened in 2001). It has a new 3.5 meter dome and a 30cm Newtonian-Cassegrain f/3.5 and f/12 telescope fitted with a CCD camera and a Loy double- image micrometer (~linked shown as example from Arizona).
