Observing the Galilean Moons
Spots the giant gas planet, Jupiter’s four largest moons – The Galilean Moons.

See above the image (left to right) - Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto  - were first seen in 1610 by the Italian Galileo Galilei, known as the Galilean moons, after his name.

Through a small telescope  or binoculars, it appears like faint stars lined up on either side of Jupiter’s equator and change position every day as the moons orbit the planet.

Sometimes one or more may be missed because of either in the front of or behing Jupiter, or lost in Jupiter’s shadow.

See the SkyMap for Tonight one of the Galilean Moons – Europa is missing tonight as it’s in the front of Jupiter at 23:30 / 11:30pm.
